Supporting High School Counselors Who Help Students Dream Bigger

A student’s path to college often begins with one person who helps them see what is possible.

For many students, that person is a high school counselor.

Counselors help students navigate applications, financial aid, college searches, career questions, and some of the biggest decisions they have made so far. Just as importantly, they help students build confidence in what comes next.

At Concordia University Texas, we want to support that work and celebrate the people doing it. Two of the ways we do that are through our Dream Starter Mini Grants and Counselor of the Year recognition.

Dream Starter Mini Grants

The Dream Starter Mini Grant program is designed to help high school counselors strengthen the college-going culture on their campuses.

Concordia Texas awards four $250 mini grants to counselors with creative ideas that encourage students to explore higher education and take meaningful next steps toward college.

These grants are intentionally flexible because every school community is different.

A Dream Starter project could support a FAFSA completion night with food for families, help fund a trip to a local college or university, provide materials for a college decision day celebration, or support a peer ambassador program where students encourage one another through the college search process.

The idea is simple: give counselors a little more support to bring an idea to life.

Sometimes $250 is enough to remove a small barrier, create a memorable experience, or give students the extra encouragement they need to take action.

Whether a project focuses on financial aid, applications, campus visits, career exploration, or celebrating students who are continuing their education, Dream Starter is about helping counselors create momentum.

Counselor of the Year

While Dream Starter focuses on supporting a project, Counselor of the Year focuses on recognizing the person behind the work.

Each year, Concordia Texas invites nominations for an outstanding high school counselor who is making a meaningful difference for students.

The selected Counselor of the Year receives a cash award as recognition for the time, care, leadership, and encouragement they invest in their school community.

It is a chance to celebrate the counselor who stays late to help a student finish an application, answers a family’s financial aid questions, celebrates an acceptance, helps a student regroup after a setback, or simply makes time for the student who needs someone to listen.

Those moments may not always show up in a report or spreadsheet, but they can change the direction of a student’s future.

Investing in the People Who Invest in Students

Dream Starter Mini Grants and Counselor of the Year serve two different purposes, but both come from the same belief.

College-going cultures are built by people.

They are built through conversations, events, encouragement, resources, relationships, and countless small moments that help students believe higher education is within reach.

Concordia Texas is proud to support counselors who are doing that work every day, whether that means helping fund their next idea or simply taking the time to recognize the difference they make.
